Donna's Story
I am a 50 year old mother of two, and I am happily married to the love of my life. I have always done some type of volunteer service, but I never thought I would eventually become a social worker. I was having a very successful career as a New Home Specialist and everything was going well in my life. I was making plenty of money, and my husband and I had just built our third home which was our dream home. However, the unimaginable occurred...The Global Economic Crisis happened. I had only been in my dream home six months when my clients started loosing their jobs. Therefore, when they lost their job, they could no longer qualify for a home. When they could no longer qualify for a home, the Builder was at a lost. It was a domino affect that ended with me. So, I decided to go back to school again, and get a degree in Business. I also plan to go to Grad-school, and pledge Delta Sorority right after I attend GSU.
During my freshman year my beloved father-in-law was diagnose with Alzheimer. This mental disease happened so fast, and we were not prepared for what was to come. We could no longer take care of him, so the family decided to place him in a private care home, but he kept walking off the premises. Therefore, the best thing was to put him in a hospice. Dad eventually took a turn for the worst, and we would soon discover he was not properly being attended to by the staff. Bed sores were all over his body. My dear father-in law died after a few months of being there. That experience really impacted me, and I changed my major to Social Work. I would love to work with the Older Adults. I feel I was born to do just that!

Obesity and Me...
|
I have struggle with obesity since my late twenties. I was at my heaviest a few years ago which was 223 lbs. I chose to talk about obesity because of my own personal short-comings in this area. I am a emotional-eater. I love food, but when I am stress I use food for comfort. I have tried everything from Food Anonymous, to weightwatchers to loose my weight. It took me a long time to realize that I have to make healthy life choices when it comes to food and exercise, which I did not want to do. I wanted a quick fix, and sometimes I still do. A quick fix always lead to a temporary solution. Doing the research for this project has been mind-boggling, and has struck a match back under my feet. I do not want to continue to be obese. I have joined a gym, and I plan to get back to a normal weight for my body and height. |
